How to Share Files and Folders on Windows

Many people today use email or thumb drives to share files with another computer close by. There is a better way. It is worth the time it takes to set up network file transfers. Save time using third-party services or Windows systems tools for network file transfer.

Sharing Solutions Native with Windows

There is no need to use solutions from a third party to share files or folders on a home network. Windows provides the tools.

Homegroups on Windows 7, 8, and 10

The process is easy with a Homegroup on computers with Windows 7, 8, or 10. First, network these devices.  This means you are on the same local network at home or work.

Second, open Homegroup by doing a Windows search. Next, you arrive at settings for your network. Create a Homegroup by selecting the folders and devices you want to share with other network computers.

You will receive a password to join the Homegroup from other computers. After completed, each user has access to folders in which others set as shared. To transfer files drag and drop them into the shared folders.

Cloud Sharing

Cloud services, such as OneDrive or Dropbox is the simplest way of sharing files and folders. There may be a monthly fee depending your storage amount.

Dropbox offers Lan Sync functionality for users on the same network. Upload and download faster over a LAN connection. This uses your local network computers instead of using the internet.

Enable this option by selecting options cog located on the Dropbox system tray icon. Then click on Preferences. Next, go to Bandwidth > LAN Sync and check required box. Large files transfer fast as long as you both have Dropbox accounts and a network connection.

Using Your Local Network for Sharing Files

BitTorrent Sync is like LAN Sync from Dropbox. You can synchronize folders and files between computers. Do this completely on your local network, bypassing cloud storage limitations. It is possible to automatically sync unlimited data using BitTorrent Sync.

First, install BitTorrent Sync on the two systems you want to keep sync. Then add folders, set permissions. Next, generate a key, link, or QR code to share with the target device. Once you connect the target device, the folder syncs over the LAN network. Share specific folders with different people using this method.

You no longer need thumb drives, or to mess around with email limitation sizes. Not only that, but you can set the privacy on the files to keep them for only specific individuals’ eyes.
